Sealing technology

Sealing technology is one of Breidenbach’s largest market segments. As a specialist in processing soft thermoplastics, we are a development partner for the sealing industry.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) have been gaining importance in the sealant industry for many years. This is not least due to the many advantages that TPE offers over traditional elastomers.

As far as seals are concerned, we distinguish between static and (semi-)dynamic seals. Static seals are in most cases enclosed between solid parts where they are exposed to a constant pressure.

Dynamic seals are seals that are in constant motion relative to the surface to be sealed, and are subject to constant deformation. Therefore, good compression set values are often a key selection criterion for dynamic seals.

Semi-dynamic seals are seals that also move relative to the surface to be sealed, but not continuously.

For semi-dynamic seals it is therefore important to observe not only the compression but also the settlement of the material.

Material selection

For us, the choice of material is primarily based on the requirements for resistance.

When choosing materials, we usually work according to a funnel principle, selecting materials at four different levels.

  • First we ask about the temperature resistance. This criterion usually determines the general group of products.
  • Next, we look at the chemical resistance. Does the material have to be resistant to specific substances such as acids or oils?
  • The mechanical properties that the material must possess are then examined.
  • In the case of seals, this often concerns compression and settlement properties, but also the hardness of the material.
  • Finally, product specific requirements, such as guidelines, certifications or ingredient approvals, need to be reviewed.

Geometry

At least as important as the choice of material is the structural design of a seal. By adjusting the shape geometry, sealing properties can be improved and potential weak points of seals can be adjusted in advance. Thanks to our experience in the sealing sector, we can offer you practical support and help optimise your sealing.

As far as geometry optimisation is concerned, the earlier you involve us in the development phase, the better we can advise you.
